I do not know how they had bought tickets, but on the Brewers website, the schedule gives you the opportunity to look for lodging in the area for the game, so you would be best. I have stayed in hotels in Milwaukee, and there are some nice ones. There is one (the name escapes me) not too far from the Amtrak station. It is a chain hotel (Holiday Inn, Ramada, such a thing), and there’s a free shuttle bus nearby that takes you back from downtown to Miller Park. There is nothing right foot of the park.
