I will be in Michigan in May departing for New York City, how can i get the cheapest flight???

Should I book now? or wait until April? I could also leave from the Milwaukee, WI Airport instead. I have checked flights, but they are expensive. . . . approximately $ 500 one way. And I do not need round-trip. I will be in Escanaba, MI. . . Thank you.
